Cherry Nana Oatmeal with Chocolate Nut Butter
I never expected cherries and bananas to complement each other so well, but they really do. The sweetness from the bananas brings out the flavor of the cherries, and that cherry infusion adds enough wow-factor that no cinnamon is necessary–and I rarely make a banana oatmeal with just fruit and vanilla extract!

Lychee Coconut Overnight Oatmeal
Lychees and coconut milk. That’s it. I wanted to add mango so badly, but I knew if I did, I wouldn’t be able to taste the lychee as well. Considering how rare and special it is for me to possess fresh freakin’ lychees, I wasn’t about to cover it up with the (admittedly delicious) flavor of mango. In my opinion, when there’s a fruit you rarely have around, you let that fruit be the goddamn star.
Mango Tahini Oatmeal
Mango. ?
I adore mango, especially when I can find a way to temper the sweetness a bit. What calms sweetness better than a swirl of tahini?
Mango Cayenne Oat Smoothie
I love kombucha so much. I used to feel pressure to limit my kombucha intake (due to the fact that the good bottles cost like $5 each), but now that I make it at home, I can have one nearly every day!
One of my favorite flavor creations was mango + cayenne, which came about because I had some incredibly tough dried mango that I no longer wanted to snack on. As an expirement, I cut them into thin strips and tucked them into bottles of a fresh batch of kombucha. Sure enough, two days later (carbonating time!), my kombucha was delightfully mango-flavored, and I had found the perfect way not to waste that jaw-ripping mango.
Looking up various ways to elevate that flavor, I decided to try cayenne. It was an obvious choice, considering my favorite storebought kombucha is Health-Ade’s Cayenne Cleanse. I love spicyspicyspicy. <3 (more…)
Cherry Pineapple Oatmeal
I learned after making Carrot Pineapple Oatmeal that adding pineapple to anything is a game-changer. It’s a way to add great flavor and sweetness to something that wouldn’t be sweet or flavorful otherwise. ? Cherries on their own have great flavor, but not so much in oatmeal.
I’ve been trying to return to simpler porridges lately. Brownie Baked Oatmeal with Matcha Cashew Filling is great, and Yellow Cake Baked Oatmeal with Chocolate PB2 Frosting is grand, but there’s a reason why I just make Fudgy Banana & Peanut Butter Oatmeal every day instead of those elaborate concoctions.
(It’s probably the same reason I have avocado toast for lunch 5 times a week. ?)

Cherry Cashew Oatmeal
This recipe came about from two different needs. 1) More “5 ingredients or less” recipes. 2) I booked a spontaneous flight to visit mon petit ami before my spring semester started, and I wanted to build up my recipe collection before leaving (hence all the guest posts recently).
I bought raw cashews recently to make a cashew cheese log during the holidays. I had some leftover that I’ve just been saving for the next time I want to do something impressive with cashews. After a couple months, I decided that I will never be ambitious enough for that, so oatmeal it is. (more…)
Blood Orange and Raspberry Oatmeal
Every winter, I greatly anticipate the arrival of blood oranges. As soon as they pop up at the market, I buy several.
The problem is, I never know what to do with them. I like eating them plain, and I like putting them in salads, but I also want to use them in oatmeal. Citrus in oatmeal is a tricky task, as they tend to lose their bold, tangy flavor when combined with earthy oats. Plus, because blood oranges are such an underused fruit, I really never know what to combine them with.
So I used FoodGawker. I searched blood oranges to see what flavors other people were pairing them with. There were lots of salads, lots of curds, lots of homemade vinaigrettes. I saved all of them to my Pinterest for future meal inspiration. Finally, I found this Blood Orange and Raspberry Sangria. Perfect. (more…)
Banana Eggnog Oatmeal
I have been overthinking eggnog recipes way too much. I think I’ve been so intent on replicating the eggnog experience that I never considered just using eggnog as a flavor enhancer in place of regular almond or soy milk. Once I thought it like that, BAM–I thought of a whole new variety of “5 ingredients or less” recipes.
Why not combine eggnog and banana oatmeal? Is there anything that doesn’t combine well with banana oatmeal? So far, I say no. I dare you to challenge me. 😀
This oatmeal is great on its own, but can be topped in a variety of ways. Pomegranate, anyone?
(Oatmeal Rule #294: Always say YES to pomegranate.) (more…)
Spiced Persimmon Oatmeal
In case you haven’t noticed, I’m really into persimmon lately. This hard-to-find fruit has edged its way into a few recipes lately, such as this Chai Spiced Pumpkin Oatmeal and Mango Persimmon Oatmeal. In addition, I eat a massive spinach and kale salad nearly every day, and it almost always includes diced persimmon.
The other inspiration for this post was frequent commenter Christine, who requested that I need to do more “5 ingredients or less” recipes. I concur! These recipes can sometimes be limiting, but I find they make great “bases” that people can take and run with, topping with whatever they want. (more…)
Strawberry Applesauce Oatmeal
The title of this recipe is slightly misleading as there is no applesauce present. I did not buy packaged strawberry applesauce, nor did I make my own. However, by cooking the apples and strawberries together with the oats, the fruits each break down and replicate the texture and flavor of strawberry applesauce naturally!
